Last week, Teresa Greve Wolf’s Longing/Belonging was featured in Identity at the Insa Art Center in Seoul, South Korea. Selected as a “Next Generation” artist, Teresa joined a cohort exploring the question, “What defines us?”—an exhibition that examined the personal, cultural, and collective forces that shape identity: fluid, complex, and ever-evolving.
Longing/Belonging traces Teresa’s journey from Chile to the United States. What began as a short stay while her husband completed graduate school became permanent as political tensions at home escalated. Settling in Indiana, she navigated a new life that often felt unfamiliar. Her strong accent made her stand out, and she was frequently met with confusion—deepening a sense of not belonging, and a longing to.
By speaking openly about that displacement, Teresa discovered a shared experience. Friends, colleagues, and strangers described similar feelings of not fitting in or being unseen. From that shared vulnerability, connection grew—and in collective longing, a sense of belonging emerged.
As an artist, Teresa paints the stories of those who long to belong—immigrants, women seeking equality, and individuals yearning for communities where they are seen and valued. Her practice has evolved in both message and medium: larger canvases, mixed media, and, most recently, mirrors and reflective materials that invite viewers to literally see themselves within these narratives and become part of the work.
